Google AI Mode: what it is, and what it means for a business

Last updated 5 min read

Direct answer

AI Mode is a separate Google search surface you open on purpose, where you ask a question in ordinary language and get an answer with links. To open it: go to google.com/ai, or search on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app home screen — there is no setting to switch on. It is live in the UAE, in English and Arabic. For a site owner, Google documents the same eligibility rule as AI Overviews: be indexed, be eligible for a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements.

Google now has two AI answers, and they are not the same thing. One appears on the results page whether you asked for it or not. The other is a separate place you go. The second one is AI Mode, and almost everything written about it is written for the person using it rather than the business hoping to be mentioned inside it.

What AI Mode actually is

It is a distinct search surface rather than a feature bolted onto the results page. You open it, ask a question in ordinary language, and get an answer with links, and you can keep asking follow-ups in the same thread.

Google describes it as "Google's most powerful AI search experience", and says it "expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning and ways of interacting". The mechanism it names is the interesting part: AI Mode "divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously", a technique Search Central calls "query fan-out".

One line in Google's help page is worth holding onto, because it says something about how much the system trusts itself:

In some cases, AI Mode will provide a set of web links if there's not high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response.

So the links are not decoration. When the model is unsure, links are the answer.

How to open it, and whether it works here

There is nothing to switch on. Per Google's help page you can go to google.com/ai, or search on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app's home screen. (There is also an "AI Mode" experiment in Search Labs, but that is for early access to new features, not for AI Mode itself — which is where a lot of the "how do I enable it" confusion comes from.)

The United Arab Emirates is on Google's published list of countries where AI Mode is available, and Arabic is on the language list. So this is live for your customers here, in both languages a UAE business is likely to publish in.

How it differs from an AI Overview, for a site owner

As a product the two are quite different. As a piece of work, almost nothing changes, which is the useful finding.

An AI Overview sits on the ordinary results page, above the links, on queries where Google decides it helps. AI Mode is somewhere you go. Google says the two "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary" — so being named in one does not guarantee the other.

But the eligibility rule is shared, and Search Central states it plainly for both at once:

To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements. There are no additional technical requirements.

No submission, no markup that unlocks it, no separate index. If you have read our piece on AI Overviews, that sentence will look familiar — it is the same rule, and it covers both surfaces in one line.

What does differ is reach. Because the question is split into subtopics and searched in parallel, the set of pages consulted is wider than the top ten for any single phrasing. Search Central says this lets Google "display a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than a classic search. For a smaller business with one genuinely good page on a narrow question, that is the opening.

The part nobody mentions: you cannot see it

Here is the practical problem, and it is ours to report rather than Google's to answer.

AI Mode does not appear in rank-tracking data at all. We pull live UAE search results regularly. Across every search we ran this month — local SEO, agency terms, packages, the AI terms, and this one — the data came back with organic results, People Also Ask, related searches, local packs, videos, knowledge panels and AI Overviews. Not one response contained anything for AI Mode, because AI Mode is not part of the results page. It is a different surface, so a tool that reads the results page cannot see it, and no rank tracker can tell you that you were cited there.

Search Console does not close the gap either. Google says sites appearing in its AI features "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console", reported under the "Web" search type — included, but not broken out. The clicks are in your totals. Which of them came from AI Mode is not something the report will tell you.

So the honest position: a business can be cited in AI Mode all month and have no report that says so. Anyone selling you an AI Mode ranking number should be asked, in some detail, where it comes from.

What to actually do about it

Very little that is new, which is the good news badly disguised.

Google's own list of what helps with AI features is the ordinary one: allow crawling, make content findable through internal links, give people a decent page experience, keep important content in text rather than locked inside images or a JavaScript shell, keep structured data matching the visible text, and keep your Business Profile information current.

The one emphasis worth adding for AI Mode specifically comes from how it works. A question split into subtopics rewards pages that answer one subtopic cleanly. A single long page trying to cover everything competes for each subtopic against pages devoted to it. That argues for more specific pages rather than bigger ones — the opposite of the advice that produces 4,000-word guides.

The general mechanics of being quotable by a machine — where the answer sits on the page, letting crawlers in, making the entity unambiguous — are the same across every answer engine, and we wrote them up in how UAE businesses get cited by ChatGPT rather than repeating them here. If the naming is what is confusing you — AI SEO, answer engine optimisation, generative engine optimisation — that is a separate question.

Worth saying plainly at the end: this is one surface among several, it cannot be measured directly, and it runs on the same eligibility rule as the rest of Google. That is not a reason to ignore it. It is a reason not to buy a product built specifically for it.

If you want to know where you currently stand across the assistants that can be measured, we score how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name your business, on your own questions, re-checked monthly. The first check is free and comes back within one working day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on Google AI Mode?
There is nothing to turn on. Google's help page says you can go to google.com/ai directly, or search on google.com and tap AI Mode, or tap AI Mode on the Google app home screen. A separate Search Labs experiment called AI Mode exists for first access to new and experimental features, but you do not need it to use AI Mode itself.
Is Google AI Mode available in the UAE?
Yes. Google publishes the list of countries, territories and languages where AI Mode is available, and the United Arab Emirates is on it. Arabic is on the supported languages list too.
Is AI Mode the same as an AI Overview?
No. An AI Overview appears on the ordinary results page, above the links, whether you asked for it or not. AI Mode is a separate surface you open on purpose. Google describes AI Mode as expanding what AI Overviews can do, with more advanced reasoning and more ways of interacting, and says the two may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary.
How does a business get cited in AI Mode?
The same way it becomes eligible for any Google AI feature. Google's Search Central documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements. There is no separate submission, setting or markup.
Can I see whether I appear in AI Mode?
Not directly, and this is the honest problem with it. Google says traffic from its AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, but it is not broken out as its own line. AI Mode also does not appear in ordinary rank-tracking data, because it is not a feature of the results page. You can be cited in it and see nothing that says so.
Does AI Mode replace the search results?
Not for people who do not open it — the ordinary results page is still there and still has AI Overviews on some queries. Inside AI Mode, Google says responses are supported by web content and come with links, and that where confidence in an AI response is not high enough it will return a set of web links instead.
